Private sector organisations, private non-profit organisations, Government agencies, and individuals fund educational research. Educational research in the Centre for Learning Innovation (CLI) is largely funded by Government as nationally competitive grants (e.g. Australian Research Council, The Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education) and competitive tenders (such as those issued by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training). The Australian Competitive Grants Register lists qualifying nationally competitive research schemes. CLI researchers have access to internal funding opportunities (e.g. QUT Engagement Incentive Fund, Women in Research grant). The Centre is eager to work with organisations and individuals on research projects and will strongly support CLI researchers to undertake such research.

It is important for the well-being of the Australian economy and the quality of teaching and learning that the findings of educational research inform education policy and are developed into products that can be used in educational situations to improve learning. Therefore, it is the aim of the Centre to undertake world standard research, effectively disseminate findings, and where possible, commercialise the findings of the research. In 2007, the Centre established the national Learning Lab Coalition to bring together innovative schools that share a commitment to building creative capacity in students and experimenting with digital learning technologies.
