Background
Many professional bodies offer prestigious Student Thesis Awards. The most widely known in the Australian context is probably the AARE award. This award is intended as recognition of excellence in educational research by doctoral students. The University also makes awards and commendations to outstanding candidates on completion of their thesis.

Faculty Awards
The Centre for Learning Innovation has instigated a Faculty Level Award. The Faculty Award system is designed to recognise outstanding doctoral or masters work which makes a significant contribution to educational knowledge.

Nominations and Faculty awardees where relevant will be nominated for awards such as the AARE award and University award. Successful students will be supported to nominate for other awards.

Eligibility
Students who have graduated between the beginning of previous calendar year or will graduate in the current calendar year are eligible to be nominated. That is graduands from 2007 and 2008 are eligible for consideration for the 2008 award.

Process
Nominations should be made by completion of the Nomination Form: Faculty of Education Outstanding Thesis Award. This form is below.  The nominee will be required to retrieve and provide the necessary information listed on the form and prepare a one page statement outlining the research and the impact of the research.

A committee of three senior researchers from the Faculty will select the awardees taking into account the following Criteria:

  1. Quality of thesis gleaned from examiners’ reports;
  2. Confirmation and Oral examination reports;
  3. Record of timely completion of milestones;
  4. Statement of support from nominator;
  5. A brief one page application written by the student outlining the research, the scholarly impact it makes and implications of the research;
  6. Review of the thesis by the committee.
  7. Publications emerging from the thesis – quality and quantity.

Outcomes
Up to three awards can be made in any one year.
The award will be accompanied by a Certificate/Plaque for the outstanding thesis, and $1500 for the winning thesis. Awards of a lesser amount $500 will be given for runner-up applications.

A collection of outstanding award theses will be highlighted in the Centre for reference by other HDR students.

Closing dates for this nomination will be 30 January.
