CLI’s ‘Academic Staff Survey: RA employment’

Results from the 'Academic Staff Survey' are now available. Academic research staff were anonymously surveyed with the aim of describing the experience of research staff working with research assistants and their current/future needs. The results clarify the nature of the relationship between research staff and RAs and together with the previous survey of Faculty of Education RAs will assist the Research Centre in catering to the needs of RAs and academic staff alike. The results will also assist CLI RAs to enhance the content-base of the RA-pid website so that it becomes a more valuable resource for RAs who seek information pertinent to their roles.
A summary of the survey results are available at: Academic_Survey_Results.pdf

CLI researcher awarded Numeracy and literacy champion

Professor Tom Cooper has recently been honoured by Minister Brendan Nelson with the award of Literacy and Numeracy Champion as part of National Literacy Week.

Professor Tom Cooper said "It is such an honour to be a ‘Champion’ of Literacy and Numeracy Week! I owe so much to the teachers who many years ago taught me numeracy. They opened a window for me on the world that enabled me to follow my dreams. Without their encouragement, and the numeracy they taught me, I would not have had the chances that life has provided. I have forgotten much of the particulars of the numeracy I learnt as a student. What I have retained is a way of looking at the world that helps me comprehend and solve problems. Numeracy provides the foundation for our future, not so much in what it does but in how it shapes and enriches our perception and our thinking.”

Project improves CLI admin processes

CLI is committed to making the conduct of research easier for Faculty of Education staff and students. In September CLI commissioned a project designed to identify and improve our administration processes and procedures. This project, Supporting Research Support - Admin, involved a comprehensive review of existing processes, focus groups with staff and higher degree students, and one-on-one interviews.

The Supporting Research-Support - Admin project is currently in the process re-engineering phase, with changes underway including the creation of an easy to use staff-student intranet containing FAQs on topics such as conference travel, project finance, and employing research support staff. New CLI emailing lists have been created to facilitate communication between researchers, and new spreadsheets/ templates for common tasks such as keeping track of research project income and expenditure will soon be available.

NH&MRC Success

A team of researchers from the University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology have recently been awarded a NH&MRC grant ($779,000) to support a 5 year study that aims to improve the health of adolescents with intellectual disability. The team includes:

  • A/Prof Nicholas Lennox
  • Dr Chris Bain
  • Dr Suzanne Carrington
  • Prof Gail Williams
  • Dr Michael O'Callahan

A high number of people with intellectual disability die at a younger age than the general population, 5-20 years younger. The standard of their health is low compared with others. They experience high levels of unrecognised disease and do not receive health promotion or health screening. The barriers to good health include communication difficulties, impaired recall of significant health information, negative social attitudes and inadequate training about disability for health providers. This study is an attempt to minimise these barriers by examining the use of a Health Intervention Package which includes a comprehensive health review, a diary for collecting and storing health information, and advocacy training. The study will seek to recruit 1000 young people and their parents and teachers in special schools and special education units in Queensland. The study is an example of innovative collaboration between the education and health sectors.
