The theme of this program is professional learning beyond schooling. The research projects within the Scholarship of Teaching in Higher Education program area focus on a holistic understanding of learning issues such as knowledge structures, functions and systems as they relate to individuals, groups, organisations and tools and artefacts.
Research in this program area is underpinned by assumptions and theories of learning sciences. Learning sciences is a novel concept adopted to understand human cognition and learning as it transcends traditional disciplines such as sociology, psychology, anthropology, philosophy, epistemology, neuroscience, etc. The diverse and interconnected nature of human cognition and real life issues challenges us to go beyond focusing on small disjointed subsets of research problems as they often fail to provide a comprehensive understanding and or a resolution of the problem. By transcending traditional disciplines the learning sciences research is able to revisit concepts previously developed within specific discipline boundaries to make it richer and more meaningful. The changing times, learning environments and professional practices warrants such grounded and holistic research.
Acknowledging the complex nature of human cognition and learning the program area has an emphasis on engaging cross discipline expertise/ approaches to design and to conduct research. The staff associated with this program area are from the Faculties of - Information Technology, Creative Industries, Health, Science and Education.
