The NLLIA ESL Bandscales Version 2

(P.McKay, C.Hudson, M.Newton and J.Guse, 2007)

Available as part of the following publication:

McKay, P. (ed). (2007).  Assessing, monitoring and understanding English as a Second Language in Schools.  The NLLIA ESL Bandscales Version 2.  Brisbane:  Queensland University of Technology and Independent Schools Queensland.

The NLLIA ESL Bandscales Version 2 is designed to help teachers to assess, report and understand the English language learning of their ESL learners. The material can be used in primary and secondary mainstream classes, and also in intensive language centres.

The revisions to the original NLLIA ESL Bandscales (McKay, Hudson and Sapuppo 1994) have been made on the basis of interviews and focus group discussions with expert ESL teachers who have used the materials for many years, and on careful analysis of samples of learners’ work at all stages of development.

With the NLLIA ESL Bandscales Version 2, teachers and curriculum writers will also find:

  • new information about the principles behind the construction of stages of ESL language development in school learning contexts
  • descriptions of how expert teachers have used the material to assess, report on progress and work with mainstream teachers
  • new genre-based insights into ESL learners’ language development as they progress through the ESL stages

The NLLIA ESL Bandscales were first published in ESL Development: Language and Literacy in Schools in 1994 by the National Languages and Literacy Institute of Australia. They have been used by many teachers in Australia and internationally to assess, report and understand their ESL learners’ progress in English in the context of their school learning. They have also provided a reference for shared understandings about ESL learning for teachers and curriculum writers.

ESL teacher in a focus group meeting speaking about the value of the ESL Bandscales in her teaching.

"I'd just like to say thank you, thank you, thank you because I don't know what I would do without them and I find that the staff at my school also find them extremely valuable and it allows me to collaborate in such a positive way with them so they are totally OK with what I'm doing both in and out of the classroom."
